INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY CELEBRATION
- SEOUL 2012



Seoul Foundation of Women and Family and IWD Korea Committee once again co-hosted the International Women’s Day Celebration - to celebrate women's achievements.



In this year, International Women's Day Celebration event was took place on 9th of March 2012 in Art Hall BOM, Seoul Women's Plaza. The event focused in the fields of science, engineering and technology. Under the theme of 'Connecting Girls, Inspiring Futures', networking reception, panel discussion and storytelling & Geomungo playing was held.



The event was opened by Ms. Hyun Kyung Park, President of SFWF and panel discussion chaired by Anne Ladouceur was followed. Three women educators, Heisook Lee(Professor of Mathematics, Ewha Womans University), Lynn Ilon(Professor of Education at Seoul National University), Shelly Luke Wille(Principal at Chadwick International Shool) attended as a panel and presented their experience and how women can achieve more success in science field.




Panelist agreed that progress has been made but noted there is still much to achieve. Prof Lee said that female involvement in sciences in Korea has increased, especially since 2002 when a law was passed incorporating a minimum recruitment target for state-funded science institutions. Lynn Ilon and Shelly Luke Wille highlighted the difference education can make in improving quality of life for women and girls in remote rural areas and how the internet can play a major role in giving school children access to real science experiments.




After the panel discussion, beautiful ‘Geomungo’ recital and inspiring storytelling performance was held by Ms. SeungAh Kim and Ms. Sunny Kim.






In 2013, SFWF and IWF Korea Committee will co-host the event, focusing on the women’s role in science and the environment.
