Career-interrupted Women in Seoul, Why did they have to quit?

Kuk-Mi-Ae
Research Fellow, Policy Research Department

This paper conducted survey on reasons why women gave up their career focusing on structural issues such as personal reasons or working conditions. The previous perception is that women quit their job due to marriage or childcare after childbirth but the survey reveals that 67.8% is due to poor working conditions and working environment, contract expiration, company’s worsening business, old practice of leaving work upon marriage, pregnancy, and childbirth while only 12.3% answered they have to leave a job due to childcare and education for children, or family care. Women’ career-interruption issue has to be addressed by solving structural problems such as improving working conditions for women, rather than focusing only on support programs for childcare.
